ABOUT

Hola! I'm Jemma... Thanks for stopping by!

I founded JI Translation in 2012 to offer Spanish and English translation and interpreting services. I specialise in translating and interpreting content on gender issues, international development, the arts and health.

The goal of JI Translation is to help form meaningful connections between Australia, Latin America and Spain. I believe that these beautiful parts of the world have so much to share, and I would love to become your trusted partner for Spanish and English language services to help you make that connection.

I provide personalised and professional language solutions and work with the very best translator and interpreter colleagues, hand selected from my networks in the language services industry. Reach out if you'd like to collaborate!

Rest assured that if I can't assist you with your project, I'll gladly point you in the direction of a respected colleague who can.

ABOUT JEMMA IVES

I hold a Masters in Social Science (Translation and Interpreting), graduating from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) with Distinction in 2013. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts (2004) and I'm a NAATI certified Spanish to English translator and Spanish<>English interpreter.

I have dedicated my working life to language and communication. In my extensive experience translating and interpreting in corporate and community contexts, I've interpreted for politicians, international athletes, farmers, Aboriginal elders, tour guides, and world experts in fields ranging from public health to engineering. I regularly provide interpreting services to hospitals and law courts, both in Victoria and interstate, assisting the Spanish-speaking community to access essential justice, health and community services.

I am also an experienced and creative teacher. I've been a Teaching Associate in the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies program at Monash University since 2017. My teaching experience includes training interpreters who speak both foreign languages and indigenous languages, and teaching English as an Additional Language. Additionally, I am an active member of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) and I mentor recently graduated interpreters and translators.

A native English speaker originally from a small town in Tasmania, Australia, I have spent more than five years living, studying and working in Latin America, in Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Consequently, I have a deep cultural understanding of this part of the world. Currently based in Melbourne, I love working with the Spanish-speaking migrant community on a daily basis.

My interests include playing music, stand up paddle boarding, volunteering for Guide Dogs Victoria and reading. I hope to continue working with languages for the rest of my life!

I was interviewed for the Conversations: Interpreting and Translating podcast about the swift transition to video remote interpreting (VRI) in 2020.
